Hockey nights in order

The NHL plays from October deep into spring, and most nights have a full card of games. On this page any game in progress leads with a red LIVE marker. The days ahead follow, each under its date, with games ordered by puck drop.

Stream rows for a hockey game unlock one hour before the scheduled puck drop. A game page left open past that moment refreshes itself, and the Watch buttons are in place when it does.

The NHL season, start to finish

Preseason and regular season

Preseason games are played in late September and the first days of October. From the 2026-27 season the regular season grows from 82 to 84 games per team and runs from October into April. Most clubs play three or four times a week, with the odd back-to-back.

A few dates stand apart. The league takes a holiday break from December 24 to 26, so those days have no games at all. The Winter Classic, an outdoor game, is usually played on or around New Year's Day. Some seasons add Stadium Series games in football or baseball stadiums and regular-season games in Europe.

Saturday is normally the fullest night of the week, with afternoon games, a crowded 7:00 PM ET wave and a late game or two out West around 10:00 PM ET. On a full Saturday the action runs from lunchtime until after midnight on the East Coast.

Overtime and shootouts

If the score is level after 60 minutes of a regular-season game, the teams play a five-minute overtime with three skaters a side, and a shootout settles it if that stays scoreless. Playoff hockey drops the shootout. Overtime there is played five-on-five in 20-minute periods, the first goal ends it, and a long one can run past midnight Eastern.

The LIVE marker on this page lasts two and a half hours from puck drop, roughly the length of a regulation game. Overtime, a shootout or a slow night with plenty of stoppages can take a game beyond that, and the marker then shows Ended before the final horn. None of that affects the stream itself.

The playoffs

Eight clubs from each conference reach the postseason. A series ends when one team reaches four wins, there are four rounds in all, and the Stanley Cup Final usually wraps up in June. Playoff dates and times depend on how earlier series finish, so the league often sets them late.

Tips for the hockey page

  • Seven o'clock Eastern is the rush hour of the hockey night, when most eastern games start together. Open your game before 6:00 PM ET and the rows go live on their own at six.
  • Not every game of a busy hockey night is listed. A game joins this page once we have lined up streams for it, and the bigger matchups come first.
  • Western games face off late on the Eastern clock. Anyone in Vancouver, Seattle or Las Vegas can read the start in local time on the game page.
  • A row that names a language other than English carries commentary in that language.

NHL questions

Tonight's game is missing. Will it show up?

Possibly. A game appears once we have lined up streams for it, and some are added on the day itself. Look again in the afternoon.

What happens if a playoff game goes to triple overtime?

Keep watching. The marker will have switched to Ended by then, because it works from a normal game length, but the stream carries on and the rows remain clickable. There is no need to reopen anything.

When do the buttons unlock for a 10:00 PM game?

At 9:00 PM ET. Before then the rows list their opening time, converted to your clock if your device is not on Eastern Time.

Does the page show preseason hockey?

Yes, as long as streams exist for the game. Preseason games sit in the same daily lists as the regular season.
